A Sammamish homeowner had a bathroom faucet that kept dripping from the spout, and had already bought the replacement cartridge. On a Tuesday morning in May, PJ shut off the cold water, took the handle off, swapped the failed ceramic cartridge for the new one and had the faucet back together in about twenty minutes.
What We Did
The faucet is a widespread set, with the spout and the two handles mounted separately on the counter, and the drip from its spout came from the cold side, where the ceramic cartridge inside the valve had failed. PJ closed the cold shutoff under the sink, took off the cold handle and removed the old cartridge from the valve body.
The new cartridge went in the same way. PJ reassembled the handle and turned the water back on, and the rest of the faucet, the counter and the drain were never touched.
Why It Matters
- A dripping spout usually means a worn cartridge, not a worn-out faucet. Replacing the cartridge fixes the drip and leaves the faucet, the counter and the drain alone.
- On a two-handle faucet, only one side may be at fault. Shutting off one supply at a time shows which cartridge is leaking, so only that one needs replacing.
- The part has to match the faucet. Cartridges are made for a particular faucet line, and the maker's parts sheet or model number gets the right one. Having it on hand, as this homeowner did, turns the repair into a short visit.
- A working shutoff keeps the house running. PJ closed the cold shutoff under the sink instead of the main, so the rest of the house kept its water while he worked.
Why Sammamish
Sammamish became a city in 1999, on the plateau between Lake Sammamish and the Snoqualmie Valley, and from our shop in Fall City it's about a 20-minute drive up the hill. That makes a twenty-minute repair like this one an easy fit in the day. It's the same trip PJ made in July, when he and Alex installed a homeowner's Delta tub and shower trim and replaced two shutoffs for a Sammamish bathroom remodel. Both of those homeowners had picked out their own parts, and we're glad to install what you've chosen.
